Western Ghats Sensitive Area: Objection raised by villagers in Rajapur Karak

Rajapur : Karak village has opposed inclusion in the ecosensitive zone of the Western Ghats. Suresh Ainarkar, sarpanch of Karak informed that such a resolution was passed in the Gram Sabha. He said that along with the objection resolution, more than three hundred villagers of the village have also registered objections on the government’s website.

In order to preserve and conserve the forest resources of the Western Ghats, some areas of the Western Ghats have been declared as environmentally sensitive zones by the Ministry of Environment, Forests and Climate Change of the Union Government. It includes 51 villages including Karak in the taluka. The government has invited objections from people regarding the ecologically sensitive area. Accordingly, more than three hundred people have filed their objections along with the Gram Panchayat of Karak. Due to the ecosensitive zone, in the future any kind of construction or house construction for building new houses, livelihood industries in the village will have to take the approval of the forest department. If so, it is likely to be objected to. Due to this zone, the government will restrict many activities in the village, thereby the development of the village will be completely stunted. At the same time, the ecosensitive zone will drive wild animals to villages and village people to cities. As a result, cities will be flooded and villages will disappear due to increasing population. The water reservoir of the Arjuna dam project constructed in the village will be used for agriculture by the people of the villages of Rajapur and Lanja talukas and the people will be able to earn their livelihood by farming. In that regard, farmers have given land for the project. Apart from agriculture, it will be possible to make a living by using the remaining land and eco-friendly resources. It will be possible to achieve economic stability by creating small scale industries using the resources of the village; However, if the environment sensitive zone is implemented, all this will come to a standstill. The objections against various such 13 points have been mentioned in the resolution of the Gram Sabha.

Karak village declared as ecosensitive by the government; However, no related guidelines and guidance have been given to the people of the village. So there is confusion among the villagers. The attention of the government has been drawn through the resolution. – Suresh Ainarkar, Sarpanch

Provide for a special fund
Instead of including Karak in the environment sensitive zone and implementing the environment sensitive zone in the entire village, the government should send the officials of the Ministry of AYUSH to the village panchayats to study the scarce natural resources. To preserve and conserve rare natural resources by collecting detailed information about them. The villagers of Karak have also informed the government through the resolution of the Gram Sabha that a special fund should be provided for it.
