Ratnagiri : The absence of the expected winter in the district is continuously affecting the mango crop. Therefore, there is a possibility of fungal disease on blossoms and fruiting instead of new growth. Therefore, the farmers have to take various measures to save the crop and the beginning of the season has to be done with additional expenses.
The economy of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts is dependent on the mango crop. Frequent stormy weather is reducing the mango production in the district day by day. The horticulturists are being hit by it, and the financial condition of the horticulturists and in turn the district is deteriorating. This year, after the end of the monsoon rains, the cold weather started in November. But due to the lack of consistency, now there are problems in maintaining Mohora. Due to this, there is a delay in the conversion of flowers into fruits. Similarly, the increase in temperature is likely to increase the prevalence of fungal diseases. So every 10 to 15 days insecticide spraying has to be done. As pesticides are expensive, the cost is increasing significantly.
Similarly unseasonal rains affected the flowering. In some places the bloom was damaged. However, in the second and third stages, the bloom is sustained. In the second and third phase, there has been good growth everywhere. Fruiting is yet to happen in some places. At present various measures have to be taken due to the fear of thrips infestation on flowering and fruiting.
