In the 45th Chess Olympiad being played in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, Gukesh defeated Vladimir Fedosev, while Arigesi defeated Jan Subel. 18-year-old de Gukesh created history by winning the gold medal for the second time in a row. He has achieved this success in individual competition. Earlier he had won gold medal in 2022 Chess Olympiad. After Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, Gukesh became the second Indian to win two consecutive gold medals. He also became the 16th World Cup Chess Master. The Indian men’s team needed only a draw in the final round to clinch first place in this category. But India won two matches, while second placed China lost points against USA. The Indian men’s team consisted of D Gukesh, Arjun Elegacy, Vidit Gujarati, Pantala Harikrishna, R Pragyanand and Srinath Narayanan. In the women’s division, India defeated Azerbaijan by 3.5-0.5 in the last match. The women’s team consisted of Harika Dronavalli, Vaishali Rameshbabu, Divya Deshmukh, Vantika Aggarwal and Tania Sachdev. This is the first time in the history of the Chess Olympiad that India has won gold medals in both categories (Women and Open). India has never had such success before. Two years ago, India won the bronze medal in the Chess Olympiad. Earlier in 2014 also India got bronze medal. Indian players played brilliantly in this tournament. Team India won 8 matches in a row and then drew with defending champions Uzbekistan. After this, on September 21, they defeated the top-ranked American team and won the gold medal.
