Under the initiative of the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, IIT M. The ongoing research work through the Nationally Important Project Research on Cutlery Art in Konkan conducted by the promoter, IIT Madras and Nisargayatri Sanstha, Ratnagiri shows human activity on the Cutlery forests of South Konkan during the Stone Age. Evidence of this has come forward in the form of stone tools. This is a very big and important achievement in the journey of human evolution in Konkan. Also, these are important evidences to determine the period of the stone sculpture structures found in South Konkan.
In the last 10 to 12 years Sudhir Risbud from Ratnagiri, Dhananjay Marathai, Prof. Dr. Surendra Thakurdesai has brought to the world a unique heritage of unique importance globally in the form of katal craft through their unremitting hard work. This work is not limited to the search but more in-depth research work is going on with the cooperation of Tejas Garge, Director, Directorate of Archeology and Museums, Government of Maharashtra, Ritwij Apte, archaeologists and experts in various fields of knowledge.
