RIYADH — In 2023, Saudi Arabia embarked on a series of ambitious projects aimed at diversifying its economy, a crucial step towards achieving its long-term development goals.
The year was marked by the launching of several groundbreaking initiatives, reflecting the Kingdom’s commitment to fostering a sustainable and diversified economic environment.
New Era of Aviation and Urban Development
One of the most significant announcements was the establishment of “Riyadh Air,” a new national carrier under the Public Investment Fund (PIF), aimed at revolutionizing air transport and enhancing the Kingdom’s strategic global position.
In a move to reshape the urban landscape, the “New Murabba: Riyadh’s Visionary Downtown Project” was launched, aiming to establish the world’s largest modern downtown in Riyadh.
This project is set to become a global urban landmark, reflecting the Kingdom’s vision of urban development.
Transformative Projects in the Southern Region
The Kingdom also unveiled plans for the comprehensive urban development of Al Qiddiya City and its global branding strategy.
In addition, the master plan for the new Abha International Airport in the southern region and the development project of Al Soudah and parts of Rijal Alma under the name “Al Soudah Peaks” were announced.
These projects are expected to significantly boost tourism and infrastructure in the southern parts of Saudi Arabia.
The “Ardara” Company and “Wadi Abha” Project
The establishment of the “Ardara” Company marked another strategic initiative, aimed at developing “Wadi Abha” project in the Asir region.
This project is poised to enhance the area’s natural beauty and cultural heritage, promoting it as a key tourist destination.
Development of the Northern Borders Region
The strategic office for the development of the Northern Borders region was established, focusing on elevating the development level of cities and governorates in the region.
This initiative aims to enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors, fostering a more balanced regional development across the Kingdom.
Launch of the Master Plan for Logistic Centers
The Kingdom also revealed its master plan for logistic centers, emphasizing the importance of an efficient and modern logistic infrastructure.
This initiative is expected to improve the investment environment and stimulate economic growth.
Establishment of Special Economic Zones
In a significant step towards economic diversification, four special economic zones were launched in 2023.
These zones are expected to play a pivotal role in developing and diversifying the Saudi economy, reflecting the Kingdom’s efforts to create a more dynamic and investor-friendly environment.
International Economic Corridor Project
In a strategic move to enhance economic connectivity, a memorandum of understanding was signed for an economic corridor project between India, the Middle East, and Europe.
This corridor aims to boost economic ties, infrastructure development, and trade exchange among the participating regions.
Collaboration with the Private Sector
The year also witnessed the launch of the first package of major company projects joining the “Shareek” partnership program with the private sector, valued at SR192 billion (51.2 billion dollars).
This program is designed to strengthen public-private partnerships, enhancing the role of the private sector in the Kingdom’s economic development.
Riyadh’s Special Economic Zones Center
The Royal Commission for Riyadh City (RCRC) announced the creation of a center for special economic zones in Riyadh, aiming to boost the city’s business competitiveness and transform it into a major regional hub for global companies.
Each of these initiatives represents a significant stride towards diversifying Saudi Arabia’s economy and enhancing its global economic standing.
