Saudi Arabia granted WHO certificate for eliminating trans fat

RIYADH — The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, represented by the Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA), has achieved a significant milestone by obtaining the World Health Organization (WHO) Validation Certificate of Trans Fat Elimination, positioning the Kingdom among the first five countries worldwide to receive the certificate.

This achievement is in line with the goals of Vision 2030 and the healthcare sector transformation program, which aim to enhance preventive measures against health risks and foster a vibrant society with a focus on a healthy lifestyle.

The WHO grants this certification based on multiple criteria, including implementing a best-practice trans-fatty acids (TFA) elimination policy by the member state and establishing robust monitoring and enforcement systems.

By eliminating industrially produced TFA, also known as partially hydrogenated oil (PHO), the Kingdom has not only improved the nutritional value of its food products but has also made significant strides towards achieving the targets and indicators set forth by the healthcare sector transformation program.

These include increasing the average lifespan of individuals in the Kingdom, reducing the prevalence of chronic diseases such as cardiovascular illnesses, and ensuring a fulfilling, healthy, and high-quality life for all members of society.

In line with Vision 2030 and WHO recommendations, SFDA has developed legislation in recent years to eliminate trans fats, which resulted in the issuance of the Saudi Technical Regulation No. SFDA.FD 2483 Trans Fatty Acids (Trans Fats) prohibited using partially hydrogenated oils in the food industry.

This regulation applies to all food products intended for human consumption, except for completely naturally sourced hydrogenated oils and trans fats from animal-sourced foods.

WHO urged member states in May 2023 to apply for the first Validation Program for Trans Fat Elimination; the second session will begin next year. — SPA
