Ratnagiri: There are 1 thousand 839 horticulturists in the district with ‘GI’ registration

Ratnagiri : Geographical Index (GI rating) has been given to Konkan Hapus to prevent the sale of other mangoes in the name of Konkan Hapus to stop cheating consumers in the name of Konkan Hapus. The sale in the name of ‘Hapus’ is being opposed by the horticulturists; However, for this registration, the organizations providing GI have to hold meetings of horticulturists. So far 1 thousand 839 horticulturists in five districts have registered GI, which is the first number in the state.

Hapus from Raigad, Palghar, Thane, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg have got GI rating 3 years ago. The Hapus Mango of Devgad is known as ‘Devgad Hapus’ and the Hapus of Ratnagiri is known as ‘Ratnagiri Hapus’. Ratnagiri and Devgad hapus mangoes cannot be sold under the name of Karnataka Hapus mangoes as they are GI rated; However, for that, the horticulturists need to register officially for GI designation. After this registration, the growers can put the GI tag and send the mangoes for sale. After scanning the barcode placed with the fruit, the mobile will get information about the producer and processing industry of the fruit.

In Ratnagiri district, mango is cultivated on 65 thousand hectares and there are 20 thousand gardeners in the district. At the same time, there are 31 thousand 250 hectares of area in Sindhudurg district, and there are 34 thousand 450 horticulturists; However, the response to GI registration is minimal. Konkan Hapus Mango Growers and Produce Sellers Co-operative Society, Kelshi Area Mango Growers Association, Devgad Mango Growers Association are pursuing the horticulturists for GI rating registration. 900 horticulturists, 140 processing professionals have registered in Ratnagiri district and 799 horticulturists have registered from Sindhudurg district.

Necessary documents

2600 fee apart from Aadhaar Card, Election ID Card, Satbara is required for ‘GI’ rating. In this fee, the organization has been entrusted with the responsibility of monitoring the quality of mangoes for ten years. Only after registration, registered persons can use Hapoos tag or barcode.
