Ratnagiri : An important meeting of the Port Department was held regarding the commencement of the stalled last phase of Mirya Anti-Erosion Dam.
Port officials along with the contractor reviewed. Instructions have been given to the contractor to start construction of the top (upper) part of the embankment and the complete embankment of 1200 meters within four days. Port authorities confirmed this.
Mirya anti-erosion dam work is in final stage. Out of three and a half km, 1200 meters work is left. All but one of the seven danger zones in the survey conducted by the Port Department have been completed; But the stretch from White Sea to Jaihind Chowk remains. During the work of this phase, a dispute arose over the space required to transport the machinery. The work was stopped due to the opposition of the land owner. Locals also submitted a statement to the port department for this work to be done; But even though the rainy season has started, this work has not got any time yet. When we discussed this with the port department, it was said that there is little chance of this work being done in this monsoon season. Excavation will have to be done in the sea to prepare the base of this dam. Now this work was not possible as the sea was flooded. Due to this, the work schedule of the 1200 meter embankment was missed. It was said that this work would be done after the rainy season; But as this is a danger zone, there was a fear of large-scale erosion of the coast in this area and the water of the sea waves entering the settlement. As a precautionary measure, the contractor had prepared to immediately protect it by placing rocks and tetrapods in case of erosion.
Now that the monsoon is over, the port department is behind the contractor for the remaining work. The senior officials of the port held a meeting with the contractor yesterday. In this he has given instructions to complete the top of the 1300 meter embankment while the remaining 1200 meter anti-erosion embankment between Jaihind Chowk and White Sea.
The contractor had a meeting with the seniors. In this meeting, instructions have been given to carry out the remaining work of the dam. The dam work will start in four days. – Rahul Sisode, Port Engineer, Ratnagiri
