Ratnagiri Carving and Hapus Mango on the award winning coin of the International Coin Concept Competition

Mumbai: In the 'International Coin Concept 2023' competition organized by Japan Mint (Mint), sculptor Mukesh Puro has been honored with the 'Fine Master Artist' award for presenting a coin design based on the theme 'Stone Age Cutlery in Konkan'. So the artwork presented by him has been honored as 'Fine Art'. Interestingly, Mukesh Puro has depicted the carvings against the background of Hapus mangoes, another familiar sight of Ratnagiri.

On this 12 cm diameter and 1.2 mm thick Bass relief coin, Mukesh has created a butchery design from Runthetli in Ratnagiri on one side and around it is written the words Ratnagiri, Maharashtra, India. On the other side of the coin, the carving design of Kasheli is depicted in the background of the famous Hapus mango from Ratnagiri.

The International Coin Concept Competition is organized every year by the Japan Mint, an administrative organization of Japan. Artists from different countries participate in this competition. Through this competition, the institute seeks out and honors artists from around the world who are using their intellectual skills and artistic techniques to work in the art form of raised sculpture. More than 250 competitors from around the world participated in the 2023 competition. The first 5 (Italy, Ukraine, Japan and India) were selected from this competition. These five persons include Mr. Mukesh Puro of India. The winning coins are collected in the Coin Museum in Japan and the international value of the artwork is determined.

He has also received the honor of Government Fellowship. Presently he is working as Principal in Arts College, Girgaon, Mumbai. Mukesh for his work by 'The Indian Art Society'. 'The Bombay Art Society'. 'The Art Society of India' IFAX. (New Delhi) has been honored from time to time by various prestigious organizations.

In the International Coin Design competition organized by Japan Mint, which is considered globally prestigious, the competitor presenting his art (design) needs to know the innovation of the subject, its historical importance, and its special place in our country. For that, after presenting the concept (design), the contestant is interviewed. After this, based on the presented concept, the actual coin has to be produced and presented according to the criteria given by the organization. After going through all these processes, the institute selects the first five contestants.
