Ratnagiri : With the passage of time sesame crop has been neglected. Although traditional sesame varieties are in use, their productivity is low. The Rice Research Center of Konkan Agricultural University at Shirgaon has researched 'Karla' sesame and developed a new variety.
Konkan Agricultural University's first research on sesame seeds, this variety produced by the university has a yield of 450 to 500 kg per hectare.
During the Kharif season, paddy is the main crop and nagli/Nachni is the secondary crop grown in the district. Sesame crop grows best in fallow, barren, water-drained areas. The area under sesame cultivation in the district was only 0.20 hectares. Due to the low productivity due to traditional varieties, research on this has been started since 2014-15 at the Rice Research Center of Shirgaon, Konkan Agricultural University. The research was conducted by collecting sesame varieties from Nashik, Solapur, West Maharashtra. The research has been completed and a new variety of 'Karla' has been developed.
This crop is produced in less water, less days. The new variety is currently being tested internationally. It was made available to the farmers for experimentation during the last Kharif season. Productivity is being checked by farmers. In the next few days, the new variety of 'Karla' will be named and the new variety of 'Karla' will be made available to the farmers in the coming Kharif season.
'Karla' sesame can be taken as an intercrop in mango, cashew horticulture. So that the farmers can get income from monsoon sesame farming. Nutrients like calcium, fiber, iron, phosphorus are found in black sesame seeds. which are nutritious for the body. Consuming black sesame in diet improves digestion. Hair and skin are also benefited. Therefore, sesame and sesame oil are also used in the diet. The quality of the crop depends on the amount of oil in the sesame seeds. The crop modified in the research center will definitely be beneficial to the farmers. Cultivation will be encouraged
Income from intercropping
Due to the low productivity of traditional sesame, this crop was neglected, so the district used to import sesame seeds from foreign countries. There was a demand for sesame seeds from the farmers as well. The research of the university has been completed and the new variety has been developed. Even if planted at the end of August, the crop is ready in three months.
Less labor, less days
The specialty of the variety developed by the university is that it requires less labor, time and money for the crop. Sesame oil content is 42 percent. Flowering takes place in 35 to 40 days and crop is ready in 90 days. Productivity per hectare is 450 to 500 kg. No wildlife disturbance.
