In Kelshi village of Dapoli taluka in Konkan, there is a generational tradition of dancing with a burning palita (torch) after the arrival of Gourai during Ganeshotsav. This traditional dance of Palitya was performed on the night of Gauri Pujan yesterday. The audience was dazzled by this dance of mass palitas, witnessed by Srikalbhairava, who took up a lit palita to pay homage to Mahervasin Gaurai to the beat of drum and clarinet. In this dance the foremost person carries a torch. Others have palitas in their hands. This dance can be seen in Kelshi village in Konkan during Ganeshotsav. This dance is a unique tradition of Konkan. On the arrival of Gaurai, villagers from all the wadis of Kelshi village dressed in white sadara, dhotar-lenga and caps on their heads, carrying burning torches and pallets in their hands, dance rhythmically to the beat of Sanayi dholi. Carrying burning palitas in their hands, the village gathers and performs the palita dance to the song ‘Aaleli Gavar Phuloon Jaye, sit on the garden and eat the combs’ near the Srikalbhairav temple.
