The Mumbai University Inter-Departmental Chess Tournament was inaugurated today. It was held on 02 September at DBJ College, Chiplun. This is the first inter-divisional competition of this year and 48 contestants, 6 boys and 6 girls each, selected from four divisions namely Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburb, Thane and Konkan participated in the competition. FIDE Master Anirudh Potwad of Thane has been given first rank of the competition and according to FIDE rating system Atharva Jail of Mumbai city has been given second rank and Neil Shintre third rank. In the girls’ category, the woman candidate Master Kriti Patel of Mumbai city has been ranked first, Avril David has been ranked second and Yuti Patel has been ranked third. At the inauguration of the competition, Dr. Mr. Manoj Reddy, Chairman of Selection Committee of the competition. Chandrakant Naik, Vice Principal Dr. Chetan Athawale, International Umpire and National Chess Coach Vivek Sohni, Senior College Gymkhana Chairman Dr. Samrat Mane, Junior College Gymkhana Chairman Prof. Vilas Joshi, Head of Gymkhana Department Shri. Vaman Joshi, College Registrar Shri. Anil Kalkutaki along with Konkan Zone Secretary and selection committee member of this competition Shri. Shashank Upshete was present. The competition was inaugurated by lighting the lamp, worshiping the image and walking the patta. The said competition is being organized in the Swiss league style and a total of 5 rounds will be played. At the end of two rounds, Mumbai city and Thane division have shown dominance and tomorrow. In the innings to be held on September 3, Mumbai suburbs and Konkan division have a chance to win. The players selected in this tournament will lead the University of Mumbai in the All India University Tournament. The University and the Gymkhana Department stand firmly behind all the athletes and are determined to provide more prizes for these competitions in the coming years and to provide appropriate facilities to the athletes considering their expectations, Dr. Manoj Reddy said.
