Fire at hospital in India kills 10 infants; investigation underway

NEW DELHI — A tragic fire at a hospital in northern India’s Uttar Pradesh state has claimed the lives of at least 10 infants.

The fire broke out late Friday in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Jhansi Medical College, located in the city of Jhansi.

Health official Sachin Mahor confirmed that more than 50 babies were admitted to the unit, with 10 reported dead and several others rescued.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has instructed officials to carry out immediate relief and rescue operations.

Television footage showed anguished relatives outside the hospital, desperately searching for their loved ones.

Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak stated that a probe would be conducted to determine the cause of the fire. — Agencies
