The forest department has taken the help of drones to bring to light the ways of setting up illegal charcoal furnaces by felling trees in dense forests. In this, the forest department has succeeded in finding as many as three coal furnaces in Chiplun taluka in the first attempt. It was said that after the information that this kind of bullfighting is going on in the wild areas of Konkan by throwing dust in the eyes of the system, now the forest department has become active and this campaign will be implemented intensively.
The forest department had received information that charcoal kilns were being set up illegally in some places in the rural areas of Chiplun taluka. But there was no concrete evidence in this regard. This work was done secretly in the dense forest. This matter was not easily observed as the charcoal was prepared after felling the trees by placing the logs in large pits taking care to create a minimum amount of fire and smoke. The investigation has revealed that this coal is being sold to hotels and other businessmen in the nearby area at the rate of Rs.30 to Rs.60 per kg.
