Crimes against 29 percent of candidates this year; 38 percent millionaires!

Mumbai: It has come to light that out of the four thousand candidates who entered the Legislative Assembly field to test their political future, as many as 19 percent of the candidates have been charged with serious crimes such as rape, violence against women, murder, attempted murder, and 29 percent of the candidates have been charged with various types of crimes. Interestingly, 38 percent of the candidates in this year’s elections are millionaires.

The Supreme Court and the Election Commission have ordered all the political parties to explain why they nominated persons with criminal backgrounds for the elections and why they did not nominate other persons and also to disclose the details of the crimes against the candidates. Although these orders were given to prevent criminalization of politics, it is clear from the assembly elections in the state that political parties give priority to those who are likely to win over any other criteria.

According to the latest report of the ‘Association for Democratic Reforms’ (ADR) about the elections in the state, 4 thousand 136 candidates, including 204 women, are in the fray in 288 constituencies. There are 490 of national parties, 496 of regional parties and 2 thousand 87 independents. According to the analysis of the details in the election affidavit of 2201 candidates, 29 percent of the candidates have various types of crimes. Serious crimes such as rape, abuse of women, murder, attempted murder have been registered against 19 percent of the candidates.

There are 202 women candidates in the election and 48 candidates do not have a simple PAN card. 47 percent of the candidates have completed their education only up to 12th standard and 47 percent of the candidates are graduate or post graduate. 10 candidates are uneducated.

The maximum number of 68 percent of BJP candidates have various crimes filed against them, Shiv Sena (Thackeray) 66 percent, Shiv Sena (Shinde) 64 percent, NCP (Sharad Pawar) 61 percent, Congress 58 percent and NCP (Ajit Pawar) 54 candidates. 50 candidates are accused of rape and 23 candidates are accused of rape.
