China’s ‘nuclear submarine’ sunk in the sea?

A senior US official has claimed that China’s nuclear submarine has sunk in the sea. A new nuclear-powered attack submarine built by China sank earlier this year, he said.

The US official said it was an embarrassment for Beijing, which wants to build up its military capabilities. China already has the largest navy in the world with over 370 ships.

China’s new first-class nuclear-powered attack submarine sank between May and June, an official told Reuters. A spokesman for the Chinese embassy in Washington declined to comment on the matter, saying he had no information. The Chinese official said, ‘We are not familiar with the situation you described and we have no information to provide at this time.

The US official said it was not clear what caused the submarine to sink. The submarine’s quality is now being questioned, an incident that raises serious questions about the PLA’s internal accountability and oversight of China’s defense industry. No wonder the Chinese Navy would try to hide the sinking of its nuclear submarines. The official also said that this news was first published by the Wall Street Journal.

Planet Labs has released satellite photos taken in June, showing cranes at the Wuchang Shipyard in China. According to a US Department of Defense Pentagon report, by 2022 there will be three nuclear-powered ballistic missiles, six nuclear-powered attack missiles and 48 diesel-powered attack missiles.
