Australia’s ruling Labor Party loses Queensland election, ending nearly a decade of rule

BRISBANE — Australia’s ruling Labor Party suffered a significant defeat in Queensland’s elections, bringing an end to nearly a decade of governance in the state, local media reported on Sunday.

The conservative Liberal National Party (LNP) emerged victorious, securing 48 seats in Saturday’s elections—one more than the 47 needed for a majority, according to ABC News.

In contrast, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor Party managed to win only 30 seats, while the Katter’s Australian Party (KAP) garnered three seats.

The Greens and One Nation each secured one seat, alongside independent candidate Sandy Bolton.

The Labor Party’s loss was marked by a significant drop, as it lost 21 seats to the LNP.

LNP leader David Crisafulli declared victory late Saturday night, while outgoing Queensland Premier Steven Miles conceded the defeat and congratulated Crisafulli on his success. — Agencies
