Ratnagiri : The meetings organized by the Jamaatul Muslimin Rajivada Core Committee sponsored Fishermen Sangharsh Samiti at Rajivada, Phansop, Bhatye and Someshwar have received good response from the fishermen to remove the silt from the Mandvi harbor at the mouth of Bhatye Bay. Fishermen have also supported this fight. Therefore, a large number of fishermen will attend the indefinite hunger strike on January 26 in front of the Collectorate.
Fishing is the main occupation of fishermen in Bhatye Bay area. The area of Bhatye Khadi has been silted up for many years. However, since the Mandvi port which is the mouth of Bhatye Bay is also filled with silt, the existence of fishermen has arisen. Fishing boats have to wait for the incoming tide to move from Mandvi port to the sea. Due to this silt, the boats have often sunk and the fishermen have lost millions of rupees. Apart from this, unfortunate incidents of drowning of sailors on boats have also happened here.
Meanwhile, for the past several years, demands have been made by the fishermen's organizations of Rajivada, Karta, Phansop and Bhatye regarding the removal of silt from Mandvi port, but it was ignored by the government. As a consequence, the existence of fishermen in the bay area has been questioned. Therefore, since the last two years, the issue of silt has been taken up by the Fishermen's Struggle Committee. Despite giving representations to the government many times, it was ignored. Finally, the Sangharsh Committee announced a decision to go on an indefinite hunger strike from January 26 to intensify the fight regarding the sludge issue and a statement was also given to the government.
For this, the Fishermen's Struggle Committee has started going to villages in the Bhatye Bay area and holding meetings of fishermen. Fishermen's meetings were held in Phansop, Bhatye, Rajivada and Someshwar villages. The fishermen responded to these meetings and announced their support for the indefinite hunger strike.
