Emergency system for the safety of tourists in Sindhudurga

Nitin Kadam

Sindhudurg: Almost 25 years have passed since Sindhudurg was declared as the first tourist district in the country. However, even after all these years, the maritime security on the beaches is seen to be reliable. It is reported that over 100 tourists have drowned in the last 25 years at various beaches in the district during this period. Although over-excitement of tourists is responsible for this, lack of lifeguards, security guards and emergency systems are the major reasons behind this. A few days ago, 5 students of Pune died after drowning in Devgad sea.

Generally, the tourist season starts from November in the district. This year, this season has started with tourist accidents. In the month of November, three tourists drowned in Tarkarli sea. Two of them managed to be saved, while one drowned in the sea. Then a few days ago, 6 students from a trip from Pune to Devgad drowned while bathing in the sea; One of them managed to be saved, while 5 people drowned. It included 4 female students.

In the district, similar to Devgad, Tarkarli, Vairi, Devbagh, Shiroda, Sagareshwar etc., such accidents are regularly occurring on the coasts. Seeing the clean and silver beaches and the blue water here, the tourists cannot stop the temptation to take a bath in the sea. Many tourists do not know about swimming in the sea. Excited tourists go into the deep sea and suddenly get dragged into the water and lose their lives.

Ignorance of the sea is the main cause of accidents: Dilip Ghare

Speaking about these accidents, Malvan fisherman leader Dilip Ghare said, tourists are completely ignorant about the sea. They have no experience of swimming in the sea. Although the ocean appears calm from above, internal water currents are active. These currents are mainly of three types namely strong, medium and slow. Only when the fishermen throw their nets in the sea for fishing do they understand this current. Due to this, it is not possible for tourists to understand such a current. Sometimes these currents flow from shore to sea, sometimes from sea to shore. Among these currents flowing from shore to sea are more dangerous. Also, 2 to 3 feet depth is safe for bathing in the sea. The girls in the accident at Devgarh had gone into 5 to 6 feet deep water. This matter is important. Along with this, water depth, tides, height and speed of waves are also important. Dilip Ghare said that tourists drown in the sea because they have no knowledge of the above.

The need for tourism police

The district tourism federation has been continuously demanding the appointment of tourism police at the coastal areas where tourists flock. However, he has not received any response from the government. A few years ago, the government had given instructions to appoint lifeguards on the beaches through the respective Gram Panchayats. Accordingly, the village panchayats of Tarkarli, Devbagh, Vairi-Bhootnath etc. had appointed lifeguards. However, lifeguards refused to work due to low salary and lack of other facilities. Considering all these shortcomings, the government needs to take special measures for the safety of tourists.
