The only government blood bank in the district at the Government Medical College and District General Hospital in Ratnagiri is currently facing a huge shortage of blood. Blood donation camps are not held due to elections, Diwali. The government blood bank has been hit hard. Surgery for all diseases is being done in the district hospital. It requires at least 25 blood bags of all blood groups daily. But due to lack of blood donors, surgeries of patients have been delayed.
One has to exercise for blood type. Therefore, maximum number of blood donors are requested to donate blood. There is a shortage of blood in the blood centers of the district for a month. So the relatives have to go door to door for the blood group bag. There are difficulties in getting blood for dengue, thalassemia, maternity, accident patients. Patients come to the district hospital from the ends of the district. About 500 outpatients are examined daily. Accident department, maternity department, epidemic patients are admitted in large numbers. Some patients are scheduled for surgery, but are delayed due to lack of blood.
