Imphal: After the bodies of three people who went missing last week were found in Manipur’s violence-hit Jiribam district on Friday, the anger that erupted among the citizens spread to the capital Imphal. Angry protesters demanding justice for the dead targeted the residences of three ministers and six MLAs. After that, the administration has imposed a curfew in the Imphal valley and internet services have been suspended.
Last week, 10 insurgents from the Kuki-Zo community were killed in an encounter with security forces in Jiribam. At that time, some persons in the relief camp had gone missing. The bodies of two of them were found the next day during a search operation while the bodies of three persons, a woman and two children, were found on Friday near the confluence of the Jiri and Barak rivers on the Manipur-Assam border. This led to a wave of anger in Imphal. In Imphal, an angry mob vandalized the houses of three of the six MLAs and set fire to their properties. A curfew was imposed and internet services were temporarily suspended in seven districts as the law and order situation worsened in the districts of Imphal East and West, Vishnupur, Thoubal and Kaching in the Imphal Valley. A mob attacked the house of Health and Family Welfare Minister Sapam Ranjan in Lamphel Sankithel area. Then the residence of Consumer Affairs and Public Distribution Minister L Susindro Singh was also attacked.*The bodies of the rebels were shifted to Churachandpur.
Meanwhile, cremation bodies of 10 Kuki-Zo youths killed in an encounter with security forces in Jiribam last Monday have been shifted to Churachandpur. His post mortem was conducted in Silchar city of Assam. After that, their bodies were airlifted to Churachandpur.
