‘Tiger Baras’ celebration in Talwali!

Guhagar: Many traditional festivals are celebrated in Konkan. But Diwali celebration for the protection of their livestock is a unique and in some places traditional celebration of tigers, this festival has earned a unique place as a symbol of compassion for the dumb animals and care for their lives.

Even today, this festival is celebrated with great enthusiasm in Talvali village of Guhagar taluka.

On the second day of Kartiki Ekadashi i.e. Dwadishila some wadis of Talvali village come together to celebrate this festival. Specially at each wadi level and in some places two to three wadis come together to celebrate this festival. Once the rice harvest is over, domestic animals are set free. These cattle go to the forest area. Tigers and leopards sometimes threaten their lives. To avoid this, the festival of ‘Waghbaras’ is celebrated. This information is given by the elders. On this day, rice and money are collected from the villages. This involves cooking a meal together at a designated spot in the forest. Two fasting persons are painted and worshiped. Mistaking them for tigresses, they are beaten for a fixed distance.

Also at this time crabs are caught and cooked in the nearby rivers and streams and the meal program is held with great enthusiasm. Many people take part in this event of eating in the forest with great enthusiasm. At that time, everyone seems to be enjoying a forest meal. This festival is still celebrated every year in various places according to tradition. Villagers believe that by doing this, the tiger calms down and the cattle are protected. This year also this festival was celebrated with great enthusiasm from various palaces in Talvali. On this occasion, young and old people from Agarwadi, Bhelewadi, Davalwadi villages in Talvali area participated in this program with great enthusiasm.
