After almost 18 years, the Indira Gandhi Cultural Center in the city was started a year ago. During this year, 60 small and big programs were presented in the theatre. The city council got an income of 3 lakh 50 thousand from it. But the electricity bill has cost as much as 12 lakh 76 thousand Γ Rs. Other expenses are not accounted for. Therefore, the citizens are asking how this white elephant will be fed and the administration has to find the reasons and solutions for the loss. Chiplun has a cultural heritage. Indira Gandhi Cultural Center was established here a few years ago to preserve it. In the early days, the plays and other programs performed here did not bring any profit to the city council, but it did not cause any loss either. Somehow the expenses were covered. It was made possible by the rules and their implementation of what programs should be held here. However, after that some people’s representatives got hold of it. Hence, wedding ceremonies, receptions, social gatherings started taking place here. Due to this, the chairs and other materials of the theater were vandalized. Since then these theaters have been losing money as these programs have been held for a nominal fee. www.konkantoday.com
