Ratnagiri : The forest department said that the campaign to catch the monkeys and apes that are damaging fruit crops including mango and cashew orchards will be started before the mango season. A proposal of Rs 35 lakh has been sent to the District Planning Department by the Forest Department for this campaign.
Fruit orchards and agricultural crops in Ratnagiri district are severely damaged by monkeys and apes. So the mango business has become internalized. To solve this problem, farmer Avinash Kale and gardeners from Golap raised their voice about the nuisance caused by monkeys and apes. There was also a movement for that. Due to the large increase in the number of monkeys, the farmers have to face losses. This question was raised by the farmers before Guardian Minister Uday Samant, member of Sindhu-Ratna Yojana Kiran Samant. He gave instructions to fund the ape-catching expedition. Accordingly, the district administration decided to catch monkeys as a remedy. After receiving funds from the administration, two cages were also taken to catch monkeys. A monkey catching demonstration was also conducted at Golap in May. About a few monkeys were caught in it. They were released into the sanctuary. Funding was then needed for the ape-catching expedition. 35 lakh proposal has been sent to the district administration as per the instructions of Girija Desai, Divisional Forest Officer of Forest Department. Officials of the Ratnagiri Forest Department said that after getting the approval, the campaign to catch the monkey would be taken up within eight days.
The proposal of decentralization to the government
A committee headed by the Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) was constituted to deal with damage caused by monkeys and apes. Among them MLA from Konkan, Professor of Konkan Agricultural University, Commissioner of Agriculture and Dr. The study group included representatives of Panjabrao Deshmukh Agricultural University. After submitting their report, monkey and ape census was conducted in Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg and Raigad as per the instructions of the government. After that, the government has suggested a solution to sterilize the monkeys. As per the instructions of the state government, Kolhapur division has submitted a proposal to arrest monkeys and apes in Ratnagiri district and carry out sterilization campaign.
