Portuguese Speaking Indian Village | Korlai | Portuguese Speaking Village in India | Korlai Portuguese explorers arrived on the Indian shores in 1498 and slowly started spreading their feet on the western coast of India. He came to his village Chaul in Alibaug and looked for a strategic location and built a fort there. After building a colony there and ruling Chaul and its surroundings for about two hundred years, the Marathas uprooted them during the Vasai campaign in 1739. At that time the colonists of Chaul moved towards Goa and other Portuguese colonies while some settled near the Korlai Church. Yet these people are also called by the name of Chaulkar. The language of these people living in Korlai is the ‘Noling’ language. Noling means ‘our language’. Local people also call this language as Portuguese language. Some scholars also call this language ‘Creole Portuguese’. Although this language is similar to the Portuguese language, it has gradually lost its original form due to the influence of Marathi and English languages. There is a lot of difference between Dastak of 20-25 years ago and Dastak of today. Currently around 800-1000 people speak this language. Let’s know more about this different language by directly interacting with the people of Korlai. Special Thanks: Korlai Gramasthashree.
